Sitting Pretty

Traditional and Modern Upholstery

Furniture can be brought back to life.

Gone are the days when we throw things on the scrap heap and buy new without a thought.

A simple repair, a new look with fresh fabric, or a total rebuild will transform the classic frames you love too much to part with.

Founded in 2012, Sitting Pretty is based at the St Albans Upholstery Studio, a collective upholstery workshop serving Hertfordshire and North London.

Liz Alsop

The power of good furniture design to improve quality of life is at the heart of my work.  Having inherited at a young age a set of Victorian dining chairs that were falling apart, I set to work to restore them. This ignited a life-long enthusiasm which slowly turned into a career. Our lives and environments are enriched by functional objects that have meaning and beauty, and I am reminded of this every time a customer leaves me with a unique and personal item that I have been able to bring to life.

In addition to the commissions I undertake, I enjoy passing on my skills to others and have taught upholstery at Wendy Shorter Interiors for the last 12 years.  If you would like to pick up tools yourself, please have a look at the courses we offer at

The details are not the details.
They make the design.

Liz has transformed my main living space with beautiful new pieces and expertly refreshed old furniture.  Her eye for what's right and her precision in design and upholstery brought my furniture - and my room - to life.

Sarah B (St Albans)

Liz was extremely helpful, reliable and lovely to deal with.  She had great ideas and helped me choose a fabric that was perfect.   Fabulous work, delivered on time.
Thank you so much!

Kim A (Harpenden)

Thank you again.
The chair is everything I wanted it to be.

I am able to advise on the level of treatment your furniture needs and recommend solutions appropriate to your budget and requirements.  Traditional restoration with authentic materials and techniques is my specialist area.

St Albans Upholstery Studio

In 2021 I co-founded an upholstery collective: a shared workshop of specialist makers, collaborating on ideas, resources and equipment.

Details of workshop space are available on application.
